For me, the ‘Wolf Show’ is one of the classics of Non-Violent Communication. It succinctly sums up what often stands in the way of genuine connection: our inner wolves – that is, the judgements, accusations and wild thoughts that race through our minds when we feel we aren’t being heard.
Marshall Rosenberg offered some lovely advice on this: sit back and enjoy the show. What he means is that we can listen calmly to our wolves – even with pleasure – without letting them drive us to act. Observe your own ‘wolf show’ (or that of those around you) from a slight distance, and you’ll begin to uncover the needs hidden behind it.
It is precisely this connection to our own needs that reopens the door to the people we had just ‘devoured’ in that moment of anger.
