Never put a but(t) Postkarte

“Never put a but(t) in an angry person’s face” is one of the phrases Marshall Rosenberg always used to get a laugh. It essentially means: don’t throw an “but” in an angry person’s face. However, the English word ‘butt’ sounds exactly the same as ‘backside’, and that’s precisely where the joke lies: you shouldn’t jump in an angry person’s face with your backside either.

Behind this play on words lies a core principle of NVC: empathy and self-empathy will get you further in difficult moments than counter-arguments and the desire to be right.
