Art postcard No. 04: Listen to what...

“Listen to what others need, rather than to what they think of us.” This sentence lies at the heart of Art Postcard No. 04 from Christiane Lesch’s studio, a design that translates the principles of Non-Violent Communication into an image.

Christiane Lesch, born in 1940, studied graphic design in the late 1950s and is now a renowned children’s book illustrator and mother of three. Alongside commissioned work, she devotes herself to painting for her own pleasure, which includes colour etchings as well as watercolours.

The postcard is part of a collaboration with her friend, NVC trainer Dr Gitta Zimmermann, who gave her a list of sayings relating to the principles of NVC, leaving her free to choose which ones she wished to illustrate. “And these quotes really struck a chord with me!” says Christiane Lesch. The designs evolved from numerous sketches and discussions with Gitta; as she herself describes it, it was like working with yeast dough that needs to be left to rise.
